Hola! Me llamo Julia. Soy una estudiante a La Universidad de Spring Arbor, una universidad pequeña en Michigan. Estudiando Trabajo Social, Psicología, y Español. Ahora, comprendo y leyendo Español mas que puedo hablar y correr. Este invierno y primavera (de Enero a Mayo), será estudiar Español a La Unión Escuela de Español en Antigua, Guatemala. Ser un poco nerviosa, pero muí emocionada también. Este viaje es uno de mis suenos, y ahora esta pasado!
It's crazy to me that less than one hundred and eleven days from now, I will be on my way to nearly four and a half months of total immersion in Guatemalan culture!!
I have officially reached the point in my countdown where days remaining until departure outnumber the days I will be spending abroad, and my excitement only builds. On one hand, there is so much preparation that still needs to happen. On the other, I am 100% ready to leave. As I prepare for and embark on this grand endeavor, I invite you to travel along!
I will be blogging in both English and Spanish. My English updates will let my family and friends, few of whom speak more than a phrase or two in Spanish, follow along with my escapades and keep tabs on me.
My Spanish attempts will serve numerous purposes. Primarily, it will let me see how my language and ability to write in Spanish improve over my four months. Right now, every couple of words require a trip to my translation dictionary (or, let's be honest, google translate) to make sure my tenses are correct. Hopefully the more I study the language, hear it spoken, and immerse myself in it, it will become easier and easier for me to write more and more in this beautiful language. Additionally, this blog will serve as a 'culture bridge' to students at Zeeland Christian School in my hometown. These students are learning to speak Spanish and beginning to be exposed to Hispanic cultures. Hopefully, through my photos and stories, shared increasingly in Spanish as my command of the language improves, I can bring a glimpse of the 'real life' aspects of Guatemalan culture.
